Buddy Walk 2010 | Down Syndrome Association of Central Kentucky

Finally slowing down a little bit and I have enough time to blog this event! Back in October, I had the privilege of being the event photographer for the 2010 Buddy Walk. The Buddy Walk is an annual event hosted by the Down Syndrome Association of Central Kentucky (DSACK). Each year families come out and take a one mile walk to celebrate National Down Syndrome Awareness month and support the inclusion and acceptance of people with Down Syndrome. They also have food, entertainment and activities for the kids. This years event was held at The Thoroughbred Center.
Those of you near to me know that I have a soft spot for a little man in my life with Down Syndrome. My best friend Geneva was blessed with Hudson, more often than not referred to by his nickname, “Hootie”, who has Down Syndrome. I was in the delivery room with Geneva when Hudson made his big appearance! Here is a picture slideshow from Hudson’s Birthday!

Today Hudson is a healthy 17 month old boy!

You might be surprised to hear that this guy is 14 weeks old! He reminded me more of a 5 month old baby! There is no surprise when you see his 6’ 5” tall Daddy! I think he got his looks from his gorgeous Momma too! He was such a good baby. He just smiled and cooed the whole time!

After we took some shots inside, we headed outside. I love this perfectly warm weather in November!

I might be partial, but I think these 3 little guys are too cute! Maybe that's because one is mine and two are my nephews! This was the first shoot of the year where my hands were just about frozen to my camera! The boys stayed warm running and wresting, which made for an interesting session! Can you believe this little angel is 4.5 weeks old! Most babies this age are harder to pose because they are already out of the sleepy newborn phase. Ella Marie was such a great sleeper! Our session took place in their adorable home. Gorgeous light and a gorgeous family!

Never have I seen so much personality in such a small package! By the end of the session my cheeks were hurting from laughing and smiling so much! Addie caught some “Bieber Fever” during our session and loved dancing to Justin Beiber and Lady Gaga on her Mommy’s iphone! It had to be the cutest thing I have ever seen!

“You better bring your A game,” I joked with Max as he arrived at his senior session in Triangle Park. Max’s session had been scheduled the week before, but he started to run a fever the day of our session, so we moved the shoot. So glad we rescheduled, because they day of the actual shoot was gorgeous! The weather was that perfect mix of cool and warm, the light was gorgeous, and Max brought his A game! I had so much fun at this session. Max and I just walked around town, listening to his ipod, finding neat little places to shoot in, and “trying” to stay out of trouble!

It took me forever to pick which images to sneak peek, I have too many favorites!

“Hello! Hello my little Grandangels,” she always calls as she walked in the door. The unmistakable voice is my Grandmere! Along with my Aunt Cathy, she flew in from Bradenton, Florida for a visit last week. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and you could feel fall in the coming air.

Grandmere is quite the joke teller! She had us in tears at the dinner table one night. My sister, Jennifer made her famous marinated pork tenderloin and potatoes! It was delicious! My other grandmother, Dut also joined us for dinner. That night we were all set up out back at a big patio table. The light out there was AMAZING so I ran to the car, grabbed my camera and we had a photo shoot!

Sadly, no pictures of the kids though. Sloane was asleep in my parents room just about the whole time and Breck… well he was not really camera ready. Not only was in his “skinny pants” jimmies, crocks and visor with a 3-D foam tiger on it (gift from Grandmere); he had just bit the dust on the patio and busted his lip. I think its amazing to look my dads family and then my moms family and see how strong their genes are. They all look alike! I love looking at Breck and Sloane and pointing out the different features that came from our families. I don’t know why this cracks me up, but Breck has Lee’s feet and Sloane has mine. Have I mentioned how much I love having a girl!

Sloane is now 6 weeks old. It’s hard to believe it has gone by so fast. I absolutely LOVE having a girl! Pink is officially my new favorite color! Having a newborn is completely exhausting but she is my little side kick and it’s nice to have another girl in the house!

Among the changes here at home, there have been some changes at Kristin Tatem Photography. Not only do we have a new look (thanks to my talented best friend and graphic designer, Geneva!), but we have new products and all new portrait collections. Collections featuring client’s favorite products and more of them!

I feel like the little boy who cried wolf! I kept saying over and over again how I wasn’t going to do anymore sessions before this baby got here, but I just couldn’t stay away! One of my best friends asked me to do a session of her ADORABLE little girls. Despite my giant baby bump and achy hips, I said I would do a mini session for her. All of these pictures were taken on their farm! The light was so gorgeous and the girls were so sweet. I am SO glad I was able to do the session for her!

I have wanted to take pictures of little Calloway for a while now! I just can’t get over how cute and sweet she is! She makes me REALLY excited for my little girl to be here soon! This past weekend, the rain once again ruined our pool plans. Instead we grilled out at our home and I was able to get a few pictures of Calli while we were hanging out. There is something wrong with you if you don’t think she is absolutely adorable!

Watercolor Family Vacation 2010

Just popping in to share a few pictures from our family vacation a couple weeks ago. I have completely lost the drive to take random snapshots, so its a good thing my sister (aka Aunt J) was there to capture all the fun. I need to get a good point and shoot camera so I don't have to lug my D300s with me. You can see some of those family pictures on her blog here.
On the very last night, we went out for a great dinner and then had a quick family session in GORGEOUS Watercolor, Fl. I was married in this same park! It was nice getting to take pictures of my own family. I am also really excited with the pictures I got of Breck and Lee since they are usually anti-camera these days!

I am now 36 weeks pregnant, so not much longer now! Get ready for a LOT of baby posts in the near future. I already have my new props ready and waiting! After a week straight of rain, I was worried we were going to have to cancel this session! Instead it was gorgeous and HOT! Fortunately I wasn't chasing and kids, and instead had the pleasure of meeting the sweetest couple. This little cutie belongs to one my absolute best friends! I remember the day her Mom told me she was pregnant with her and now she is almost 3! She had me cracking up during our session. Hanging out with her and her mom was so much fun!

We started out in a field that I had spotted on the side of the road. I had no idea who it belonged to and fully expected to be kicked off at some point! That didn't happen, but Anna was sure to let me know when she was ready to leave. She had been running around like a typical 3 year old. We were doing pictures in chair and she got really quiet and still with a mischievous look on her face. Next thing I knew, she was peeing through the chair! I know I shouldn't have been laughing, but I couldn't help it! So that was our cue for an outfit and location change! How adorable is she in her scarf and tutu!

Birthday Girl Layla! | Lexington, Ky Children's & Family Photographer

WARNING: HUGE blog post below. It was impossible for me to pick just a few favorites! Grab a drink.. maybe a snack and enjoy this little doll!

I have been getting so sore after each of my sessions. Anyone who has had a session with me can tell you, I am constantly up and down, laying down, up in bushes, chasing kids... and usually making some ridiculous noise to try to get the child's attention! Did I mention I am 31 weeks pregnant! Despite the soreness... I have been having some great sessions and am really enjoying the new clients I am meeting!

I knew Miss Layla's mom back in high school and have been able to keep in touch with her through facebook. I see all the pictures she puts up of Layla and have always thought she looked like a real life doll! Gorgeous eyes and cute little lips! Seriously one of the most adorable little girls I have ever met. She makes me SO excited for my little girl to get here!

This was such a dream session! Perfect client, perfect location, amazing light.... I was in heaven! Last minute we decided to switch the location to the UK Arboretum after I had gone for a family walk out there the evening before. I am SO glad we did!

I thought it was also really special that Layla's Grandmother and Great Grandmother could make it to the shoot for a 4th Generation shot. You can see where Layla gets her good genes!

We have been sick over here at the Tatem house. I took Breck to the doctor and it turned out he had a double ear infection and a double eye infection! Poor guy - I hate seeing him feel bad. Then I started getting sick! I think you officially feel like a mom when you are sick and have to take care of a sick kid at the same time! We are both feeling much better now!
I finally finished editing the pics from my family session last week! How cute are these kids!? I just loved the little ones hair! Big brown curls!! Big brother was so sweet and loved having his picture taken!

Self Portrait: Baby Bump!

I think once you become a photographer, you often forget to get in front of the camera! Out of the thousands of pics on my hard drive, you would be hard pressed to find a handful of me. Last night as I looked down at this growing bump, I decided I needed Lee to document it! So we busted out the iphone and here is the pic of my baby bump at 29 weeks. Time is flying with this pregnancy and I really cant believe I will have a newborn in 11 weeks!

I had such a fun time with this mini session family! Dad thinks this little guy is the next Gerber baby and I have to agree! Isn’t he adorable!? I came home and told my husband that he I wanted to steal him and take him home with me, he was so cute!

This was the last session of the mini sessions. By this time, the sun had dropped some and made for the most gorgeous light. I am kind of obsessed with finding the best light. Anyone who has had a session with me will know this! I probably annoyed the heck out of this family because I kept talking about the light! They were great though and didn’t even look at me funny when I suggested sticking their baby in a giant ivy bush!

You are from another planet if you don’t think these are the cutest little ladies you have ever seen! This is the 2nd time I have shot the Mom and she HAS to be the most photogenic person I know! Little baby C was easy peasy! She was so sweet and just smiled and ate a few rocks along the way.
Did you know Sponge Bob lives in my camera!? That’s what we told Big Sister C to get her to look at me! She would look into my lens and say that she totally saw him! So cute!

Custom Photo Boxes

Check out with the UPS man brought me this week! This is my custom 5x7 Photo Box. One of these is included in all of my packages complete with 5x7 prints of all the pictures from your session inside. This one is all mine though! I have bookshelves in my living room that I am starting to fool with decorating. Seriously, who knew bookcases would be so hard!? I have decided to fill up a lot of the shelves with all different size black and white photos. I am also going to put photoboxes on the shelves. I am always getting pictures printed of Breck, but I am just not good about putting them in an album. I can put up to 100 prints in these albums. I plan on having one for each child for each year. One day when I actually finish bookshelves, Ill post pictures of them too... someday.

Washin my Jeep

This afternoon after Lee got home from work, he said he wanted to go out and wash his car. I sent Breck out with him so I could get a little quiet time! Breck is out of school this week for Spring Break and he has been a stinker! After a bit, I went outside and saw that Breck was also washing his car! Of course I ran upstairs and grabbed my camera!

This was right before he started running after me with the wet brush. He thought this was really funny!

Helen's Boutique - Lexington Commercial Fashion Photographer

This week I had the opportunity to do a commercial shoot for a local clothing boutique. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous as I usually photograph children. It didn't take long for me to switch gears and about 5 minutes into the shoot I realized I was in LOVE! I had an absolute blast with these models and the girls at the shop. They were all so gorgeous inside and out!

My poor blog has been neglected! Between moving, morning sickness and freezing cold weather, I have not been taking many pictures. Finally moved into our new home, and now in my 2nd trimester, I am starting to get my photo mojo back! Now we just need some warm weather!

Here are some pictures I took of Breck. He is changing so much and getting so big! I had to bribe him with sweet tarts to get him to sit long enough for pictures!

I met 2 really sweet girls this week! I met them at their gorgeous home for a great fall session. These girls are so beautiful and had the best manners. It really was a pleasure to photograph them.

Sweet Ava is 3 and has the most gorgeous green eyes with eyelashes to die for! Her mom would tell her to show us her "angel face" and she word put her hands under her chin and make the cutest smile!
From the minute I met these girls, it was obvious how much Grace loves Ava. Grace was such a model and ridiculously easy to pose!

There are no words for how much I LOVE this one!

I had the idea to bring some red apples to the shoot. I thought it could be a fun fall prop. First Hayes started eating one, then Finley says "iwanone" (I want one). Then I handed one to Breck. As soon as I handed it to him, I saw the look in his eyes as he immediately CHUCKED the apple. Hayes errupts into laughter. Finley still chowing down on his apple. Aunt Stacy returns apple to Breck. This cycle repeted several times! This shot sums it up perfectly!

There is a gorgeous farm I drive by almost every time I leave my house. I always glance down the long tree lined driveway and dream of the chance to do a session there. Well, my dream came true! By complete coincidence, the family I had a session with last week knew the owners of the farm and scheduled the session there! I couldn't be more excited as we drove the long driveway. These kids were so sweet and I really enjoyed meeting them!

As an early Christmas / Bday present, we bought Breck a powerwheels Jeep. This is only his 2nd time riding it. I laughed so hard I had tears! Check out his giant CHEESE when he is passing by!

I heart my Camera!

Even though Breck refuses to look at the camera, I was very happy with some of the shots I got last night! These are the first shots I have posted with my new camera. I can see a difference in quality and also in the colors in my photos. I officially shot for 32 minutes and I barely did any editing on these! Love it!

We all had to get out of the house on Friday afternoon and enjoy some of this weather! We headed to the park to throw ball to Ryley and let Breck run around. Here are a couple of snapshots I got of him.

I liked this one in color, but when I converted to black and white, I fell in LOVE!

Not the best composition (on Daddys shoulders), but I really liked the background!

Gallery Wrapped Canvas

These are my FAVORITE! As I have said before, I am all about quality products. Here are some pictures of a 14 x 20 canvas that I ordered recently. I love everything about these. They feel so good and sturdy when you hold them. The detail and texture is amazing on these! The canvas is coated with protective lacquer spray, wich protects your art from UV rays, scratches, moisture and dirt.

Each canvas is HAND WRAPPED around a 1 1/2 inch frame.

Fall Mini-Shoot with Breck

I had about 15 minutes to take some pictures of Breck before dinner was ready. I love this weather and the fall light is so pretty! This is one of my new favorite pictures of Breck! This one might be going on a gallery wrap canvas!!

Breck was absolutely obsessed with Hudson. He was so gentle and kept wanting to give him kisses. At one point Geneva was sitting in a rocker with Hudson and Breck crawled up in her lap too. He layed his head on her chest so that he was looking Hudson straight in the eyes. He layed there and patted his back. Sweet boy!

This was Breck's favorite thing to do at the beach. The lake was only a few feet deep and Lee would paddle him around the shallow end. He LOVED it! Even when the boat was on shore he would play in it.

First of all - please excuse the mess, I am renovating ;)

I feel like I have been on a blogging and editing hiatus lately and its driving me crazy. I basically have blown up our current laptop with all my photography stuff, and it goes snail slow... I mean slow! So in an effort to not totally kill it before its replacement gets here, I have not been pushing it too hard. My new baby will be here before the weekend. Its a dell precision laptop with the works!

Another thing causing my hiatus is business planning! I have invested a great deal of time in researching the "best" everything for my clients. Best prints, Gallery Wrapped Canvases, custom proof boxes, best online ordering system, and framing.
I found the cutest packaging this week for all my orders! It was screaming my name! I want my prints to come with gorgeous packaging. My new website is almost finished! Soon you can also find me at www.KristinTatemPhotography.com
The best part of all this planning is that I LOVE IT! I am having so much fun and really enjoy it! The one thing I wanted to make sure of was that I had all my ducks in a row before officially getting into business. This was the one thing I always promised myself about starting a photography business - that I would not jump into anything and do it half way. I wont be taking on a ton of clients, but for each one that I do, I want it to be a great experience and prints that they will love! I literally am thinking about photography all the time... I cant sleep! Its sad, but it feels good to be so passionate about something!!

In non-business related news, Breck has officially turned into a MONKEY! He keeps climbing up on the table, up on the bar stools, got up on the counter today, and he keeps getting stuck in random places. Poor guy is so bored. I have got to get him into some sort of program. That is on my top list of things to do right now.

Well, I will quit rambling for tonight. We are headed to Florida next week, so look for some vacation photos coming soon... FROM MY NEW LAPTOP!

Last weekend we headed to the lake to relax and spend time with family. Breck had so much fun playing with his cousins and swimming in the lake. When we came home I was so tired. Just when I snuggled up all cozy on the couch, I looked out the back window and couldnt believe how gorgeous the light was. I swear it was golden! So I busted out the camera (big surprise) and bribed Lee to blow bubbles and let me take pictures of him and Breck. These are some of my favorite pictures I have taken! I think I am going to blow this one up on a canvas!

Baby Hudson +

This is sweet baby Hudson. In these pictures he is 11 days old. He was SUCH a good boy. He slept almost the entire time and let me move and mold him all over the place. Poor guy has no idea how many more pictures I am going to take of him throughout his life!

I think there is a huge misconception that professional photographers are just inherently good at taking pictures and they just own a nice camera. I think the amount of time studying, practicing and learning is easily understated. There are a million and one things to know when taking a picture. From lighting to exposure to focus to composition to post processing, the list goes on and doesn’t stop!
I literally spend almost every evening either on my computer reading and learning about photography or with a camera in my hand taking pictures. I am a member of several forums, follow photographer blogs, and have taken online photography courses. I do take a bunch of pictures of Breck, but you would crack up to see all the inanimate objects I take pictures of just to learn about lighting and such. Before a newborn shoot, I practiced by taking pictures of one of Breck's sock monkeys in my makeshift studio. The pictures were so creepy that I immediately had to delete them!

I compare learning photography to learning to be a doctor. I feel like I am in medical school right now. I have to put in the time to learn, study and practice, before running out and starting a business. I feel like I would be doing a disservice to a client if I am going into a shoot thinking, "surely if I take a whole bunch of pictures I will get a few good ones." I want to go into every shoot with the self confidence that I am going to nail the session!

The funny thing about me self-teaching myself is that I am doing this 100% for me. Not for a business, not for money, 100% for me. I truly LOVE it. I have never been so passionate about a hobby before in my life! If this journey continues for the sole reason to take pictures of my children and family, I would be completely satisfied.

On Friday night, Daddy was not feeling well, so Breck and I went for a walk. We ended up in a little field near our house. Breck is all boy! He ran around, played with rocks and splashed in the mud! It was a fun evening!
